The Spanish Military Hospital

The Spanish Military Hospital located in St. Augustine, Florida is a reconstruction of a military hospital that once stood on that site in the Second Spanish Colonial Period (1784 - 1821). During this period, there were two buildings comprising the Spanish Military Hospital, the main hospital was across the street from the present site. The present reconstruction most probably contained the main apothecary, registrar of the hospital and a convalescent area.

In those days they did not have any anesthesia, antiseptics or drugs to lessen the pain.  The patient had limited options for treatment.  Standard practices were blood letting, leaches, amputations,  and herbal remedies.  You'll notice in the pictures below some of the implements they used.

In February 2002, we attended our first investigation with other people.  Until that time, the three of us had just gone to places in the Pensacola historic district and a few cemeteries. It was so exciting!  We had been in a North Florida Paranormal Research workshop at Ripley's all day so we were pumped up and ready.

When we met at the hospital, we teamed up in pairs and each pair took a different room.  Sitting in total darkness and quiet for about 15 minutes, we thought of how it must have been in those days, no technology like what we take for granted.  Their remedies and treatments were nothing in comparison to what we have today.  The pain those people must have felt....

We began to move around the room taking random pictures since it was dark and we did not have a Night Shot camera.  We were overjoyed that we were able to capture some orbs.    After a few minutes of taking pictures, Cameo came in to our room with a Sony Night Shot video camera and let us take a look.  We had never actually seen an orb in motion, so when one came rushing by, wow, you can imagine our surprise.  The adrenaline rush was awesome.  We couldn't wait for Marlene to come in our room from the doctors office.

She was excited, too but for another reason.  She said she had felt a presence in the room that she'd been in and while checking temperatures in various areas of the room, she came across a spot on the bench that was several degrees cooler than the rest of bench.  In reviewing the audio tape after the investigation, she heard what sounded like a person washing their hands in a basin.

We were on the hunt....people were milling so we began checking out the other rooms.  Ghost Tracker Matt captured a red orb with his digital camera.  Carol walked around with Jeff's Night Shot and saw orbs actively moving about the building, cutting between peoples and skirting around their legs.  Another group of people were watching a stationary Night Shot camera in the operating room, also seeing activity.  Marlene documented EMF recordings and temperature readings.  All in all, everyone enjoyed the investigation.  We walked away from the experience with a whole new attitude and approach to ghost hunting.
