The Saenger Theatre

It was one of over 350 theaters in the Saenger Amusement Co. chain in the ... picture palace was designed by the chief Saenger architect, Emile Weil.  The Saenger Theater is a Spanish Baroque performance hall with Rococo styling. It was built in 1925 as a showplace for Vaudeville-type road shows, Broadway plays, and silent movies. It has undergone a number of renovations in its history  Opened in 1925, its Spanish Baroque architecture, in opulent Rococo style took nearly thirteen months to complete.

In the early years the Saenger hosted a colorful array of Vaudeville-type road shows, Broadway plays, and silent screen classics. Later years saw use as a movie house until 1975 when the aging edifice closed its doors. That same year ABC Southeastern Theatres donated the building to the City of Pensacola as a cultural affairs center.  The Theatre was constructed on the site of the old Pensacola Opera House which a hurricane demolished in 1916. Building materials for the Saenger were scavenged from the rubble of the Opera House, including the balcony's railing. More than eight pounds of silver dust were incorporated into the coatings on the stage's silver screen. The colossal twisted columns bordering the stage area were grooved out by the sculptor's own elbow in the wet plaster.  In 1960, a wall that separated wooden benches in a back section of the theatre was torn down because patrons were purchasing tickets to this reduced-rate section and then vaulting the wall for access to more desirable seats. During its first decades of use, that section had been known as the "colored people's balcony "in 1975- the seats faded and ripped, light fixtures outdated, and paint chipping from the walls- the old Theatre, in a state of total disrepair, was bolted shut. By the time the Saenger reopened in September of 1981, the vintage structure was ready for theatrical plays, musical productions and vaudeville, for which it was originally intended.

Investigation

Preliminary Report of the October 7, 2006 Site Evaluation for the Saenger Theatre located at 118 South Palafox Place, Pensacola, Florida

Seven GHG Team members arrived at on site at 10:00pm, departed at 1:20am

Temperature: outdoor approximately 68 degrees, indoor average 71 degrees

Humidity: average 60%

Solar xrays –  normal

Geomagnetic Field – unsettled

Moon: Waning Gibbous 99% full

Equipment on Site: 1 35mm Cameras Not implemented 6 Digital Cameras 2 Video Cameras 4 Mini audio/video wireless color cams and monitor 1 Humidity/Temperature Digital Meter 1 Compass 4 Audio Recorders One implemented 1 Remote "IR" Thermometer 1 Single Axis Digital Gaussmeter 1 Trifield Natural EMF Meter Not implemented 2 Gauss Master Meter

Audio not evaluated due to normal sounds of vacuuming and music from a nearby establishment.

Five hours and 20 minutes of video  evaluated, cursory review did not reveal anomalies.

Approximately 807 still photos under review.

Employees questioned had nothing unusual to report from their time of employment at this location.

Areas of interest:

1 - NE hallway, lower level near the "star’s" dressing room

2 - NW storage room behind balcony seating

3 - W third floor upper hallway

4 - Mezzanine balcony area over looking the lobby

5 – Balcony Box B area

6 – Equipment malfunctions

1: While touring the lower hallway in the dressing room area, a Gauss Master Meter in a padded case registered by tone high readings without activation.

Normal operation is by holding in the button on the side of the unit. The small meter is hand-held, with a needle read scale (0-10 mG), with an audio signal. This meter measures the level of EMF magnetic field radiation from electrical sources.

The area did have large electrical sources as well as water collection below the floor. At the time the electrical panels were noted and thought to have influenced the meter’s audio tone.

Shortly after in the same area the psychic noted a change in the energy, she requested a still photo be taken. In the photo is an orb beside her. Video at that time does not include this immediate area.

A short discussion concerning the electrical sources as the possible influence for both situations was noted, as well as a note to return to the area to gather more data and try to duplicate the situation. We did not reexamine this area.

2: Again while touring the building, several team members entered a long storage room behind the balcony seating on the north side of the building. Most had exited the room, except for the person with the video camera and another was seen going around the corner at the end of the storage room. The video camera person turned to leave the room when requested that the team move forward with the tour of the building, when the second person did not respond I went to the end of the room turned to a wall – no one was there.

Later two team members returned to this storage room. One sat at the end of the storage room, the other mid way of the room. They sat quietly when the team member at the far end requested a photo be taken, "I had a feeling of someone touching my hair in the second floor storage room.  April and I were sitting in the dark and after about 5 minutes I felt the hair on top of my head moving." Air vents, returns, drafts, webs or items hanging were found that might explain.

Note: GHG was notified following the submission of the report that a former employee had witnessed someone dressed in black in this storage room on several occasions.

3: The third floor hallway mid-section on the west side of the building, slight drop in temperature in the center section of the hallway, a photo taken when the temperature drop was noted included an orb in motion low along the carpet. Vents, return air registers nor insects were noted.

4: The rounded mezzanine balcony area. On tour the odor of cigarette smoke was noted. Later a team member reported the odor of cigar smoke on the south side of the balcony railing, this lasted for approximately 45 seconds. No smoke was visible and the odor dissipated. Approximately 30 minutes passed, from the north side of this same area the odor of fresh cigarette smoke was noted. Cleaning staff was at the south end of the balcony area cleaning the restroom, when questioned the response was that smoking was not allowed in the building. No odor or visual of smoke was noted at the south end of the balcony.

5: Balcony Box B seating area. In the entry to this seating area the psychic noted a change in the energy, a feeling of apprehension was also noted. Orbs were photographed from several cameras and angles in the area.

6: Equipment malfunctions:

Six of six digital cameras experienced battery failure. Each camera is a different brand and model. New batteries were installed before the investigation began. Both disposable and rechargeable batteries were in use. Normal battery life for these cameras is 450 to 800 photos. Cameras became sluggish or non operational at an average of 90 photos. (camera models: HP Photo Smart, Minolta Dimage S414, Nikon 10.2 SLR, Canon Power Shot A75, Canon Power Shot 550 and Kodak DX3900)

Batteries supplying power for the mini audio/video wireless color cams began to fail after one hour.

One Gauss Master Meter stored in a padded leather case registered by tone high readings without activation.

The data listed above merely suggest areas of interest at this time. Singularly the notes are not definitive of paranormal activity, but combined suggest more information is needed. A closer review of the areas mentioned, scrutiny and searches for logical explanations as well as attempts to recreate the situations may substantiate or disprove.

Orbs are highly debated; alone orbs in digital photographs most often can be explained by normal digital camera operation and air borne particles. Flash light tests did not indicate extreme volume of air borne particles, moisture was ruled out due to humidity levels measured inside the building except in the two areas where standing water was evident. Normal movement such as walking and air circulation will move particles, the flash reflects creating false anomalies in photos. A majority of orb photographs are taken with digital cameras in low-light conditions and are thought to be flaws caused by lack of pixils or filling of colors due to a digital defect. The lighting in the theatre was normal until the last half hour when we requested the lights be lowered. The orb anomalies did not increase with the change in lighting.

Test photos were taken in the area where vacuuming was underway, orb anomalies were expected but not documented.

Theatres are places having experienced a wide range of emotions by staff, audiences and performers. Normal daily activity and patterns of movement will leave an energy imprint. This residual energy would be similar to a movie replaying over and over. Due to the age of the building and the number of people that have walked through the doors at the Saenger Theatre GHG did expect to encounter some form of residual energy. This may be the case with the sighting of the person thought to be a GHG team member in the storage room. Unfortunately film or a second individual was able to validate the sighting, however the two team members that returned to that same area did have an additional experience of touch – a possible validation.

At this time and with the data gathered GHG Ghost Hunters cannot offer documented evidence of ghostly activity or state that it is a haunted location, the consensus of the team was that there were multiple points of interest that would indicate further research is recommended to confirm and substantiate.

The GHG team appreciates the opportunity, the time and hospitality of the employees during our time at the Saenger Theatre.
