Ghost Tracker
Investigations

The
1891 Castle Inn is a 9,500 square foot Gilded Age mansion, offering nine suites
and rooms, steps off St. Charles Avenue.
Although tucked away in the Garden District, a beautiful old world
neighborhood, just a streetcar ride from the infamous French Quarter. Next door
to the mansion where MTV's Real World was filmed and a block away is Lafayette
Cemetery, made legendary from the gothic novels of Anne Rice a resident of the
Garden District.

When
the current owners purchased the property in 1998, they were unaware that the
house came with “un-bottled” Spirits. Inquiries
to the previous owners yielded only more questions, as they had not had any
unusual encounters during their time in the house.
It
was not long before reports of two different spirits began to surface, that of a
young, barefoot female child and of a light-skinned black man.
The
gentleman that roams the third floor is thought to be a paid servant, either
Henry or Charles. spirits, fine
cigars and the ladies. Supposedly he died in his quarters He is said to have
spoken several languages, a prankster, fond of liquor and the ladies.
Folklore indicates he may have either been smoking in bed or an over
turned heating pot caused the fire – either overcome by smoke or possibly had
imbibed a bit too much, he did not escape. Previous investigations that included
psychics, the general thought is that this man haunts the Inn because of his
desire to live in the mansion rather than the servant's quarters.
Arriving
late on a rainy evening complimented by a full moon and all floors eerily quiet
set the tone for the first visit to The Castle Inn in March of 2002 as a
guest on the third floor in the Crawfish Den - the room where sightings of Henry
were most reported.
Knowing
other guests were also on the third floor, being awakened at 2:15am by footsteps
in the hallway was not unsettling. The
fact that the footsteps stopped at our door and did not retreat did prompt me to
pick up the camera. An orb was
photographed in a series of shots as it traveled from the door to a wall shared
by the Bordello Room.

Noting
a carpeted hallway outside the door prompted a half hour of video the next day.
Repeated attempts to recreate the creaking floorboard up to the door
failed. At no point on the third
floor landing did footsteps make a sound.
The
following morning the manager kindly agreed to an interview and allowed access
to the house for photographs. During
the interview, the manager admitted she was not comfortable with the thought of
a ghost(s) in the house, but had to concede too many unexplained occurrences
coupled with numerous reports from guests persuaded her to consider the
possibility.
She
told of an incident that took place one morning as she walked through the
sitting area while having a telephone conversation.
As she entered the room, a “see through” figure got up from a rocking
chair and disappeared causing her to scream and drop the receiver.
When she reached for the telephone she noted the rocker was indeed
rocking as if someone had just walked away from it.
Not
wishing to experience another encounter, at least alone, her husband would
accompany her to the third floor each evening to be sure all was in order. Several inspections would find the lights, radio and
television on and at a high volume in the Bordello Room even though no guests
were present. While this could have been rationalized as human error or
electrical disturbance, the ceiling fan turning at a medium speed could
not. The fan is not connected to a power source.
The
guests of the Bordello Room during our stay said they had felt a bit uneasy in
the room and had felt as if they had been touched.
They were unaware of the suspected haunting.
We
returned to our room late the following evening, as we climbed the stairs we
noted the guests of the Bordello Room had the volume quite high on the
television. The following morning
when we asked about the couple in that room, we were told there were no guests
in the Bordello Room or the third floor other than the two of us.
Conversation
on the second floor balcony with the occupants of the Jean
Lafitte's Hideaway yielded yet
more information. It was thought
that the haunting was limited to the third floor, but the couple had experienced
several unexplained happenings during their weeklong stay.
A gauzy drape over each end of the bed had been found tied in knots on
more than one occasion. Trying to be considerate of his lady appeared to fail,
the gentleman purposely would place the lid down on the toilet, yet each visit
to the water closet found the seat in the up position.

This
couple had not chosen the Castle Inn for the suspected ghostly activity, but
rather for the close proximity to the streetcar and the French Quarter – they
did find the ghostly aspect interesting. Earlier
in the week over breakfast one morning they visited with guests from the
Bordello Room and Crawfish Den. The
couple from the Bordello Room were uneasy and told of a bright, ball of light
that zipped across their room disappearing at the wall to the Crawfish Den late
the night before. The guests of the
Crawfish Den inquired as to the time this took place, evidently the sleeping
guests of the Crawfish Den awoke to a bright flash of light in the room at
approximately the same time.

The
stories and unexplained was intriguing enough to suggest an investigation.
In
May of 2003, a GHG Ghost Hunters team and NFPR, Inc. checked in The Castle
Inn’s second floor. We arrived on the heels of a production crew filming
a segment for the Travel Channel's Haunted Hotels feature. Southern
hospitality
allowed the team access to the unoccupied third floor rooms for the weekend for
investigation purposes.

Those
in the Napoleon Parlour and
Josephine's Boudoir shared a bathroom with more than each other.
Even though the weather was warm, cold spots were detected in the
bathroom by two team members on several different occasions.
A source of a cold draft could not be located.
Over the weekend the toilet would flush on it’s on, but only when
females were present.
|
|
The
Bordello Room was the central focus on the first evening.
Seven of the team were gathered discussing the Castle and the
investigation scheduled for Saturday night.
Equipment was still in cases on the second floor except for a few
cameras.
Several
times the doorknob would rattle as if someone was trying to open the unlocked
door to enter. Each time we would
open the door check the landing and other rooms no one could be found. The
doorknob was loose and it would rattle and shake when handled.
|
|
A
monitor and remote cam were set up so that we could try to determine if this had a
logical explanation. Approximately
20 minutes after the cam was in place, the monitor showed extreme interference
blocking the video transmission. The
doorknob rattled loudly and movement was noted. The door was opened to check the
cam and try to determine the problem.
EMF
readings were extremely high, but erratic – electrical interference could not
be determined. Temperature remained
consistent.
When
checked the cam was not in the position placed for a view of the landing and
doorways to the other rooms, but rather to the wall in a hallway leading to
Madame Laveau's Voodoo Chambers.
|
| The video cam was placed under the fire extinguisher with a
view down the hallway, the opposite of this photo. |
Cam was turned 90 degrees |
 |
 |
|
The
cam was once again placed to view the landing and the door was closed. Not long after a female team member was on the bed talking
with the others. She told the team
she had a definite feeling of being touched on her inner thigh beginning at the
knee , similar to a stroke or caress, the sensation continued to an
inappropriate area at which time she jumped up.
Photographs
during revealed an orb in the area she felt the touching.
