Grady
House, located in High
Springs, Florida was built in 1917 and served as the town's first bakery.
Later it served as a boarding house for railroad workers. After the
railroad boom, the Grady House was transformed into an apartment building
which housed several of High Springs' prominent citizens. Now on the
National Historic Register and restored to its earlier charm, Grady House
is a comfortably elegant bed and breakfast inn with southern hospitality.
Decorated in early twentieth-century charm, it is easy to imagine a time
when the pace was a little slower and people had time for the finer things
in life.
Interview
with the Owners:
Owners Tony and Kurt feel a male presence in their
family room. When they bought the place, they were ambivalent toward
ghosts. Kurt would go upstairs to clean the rooms after guests would
leave and would notice that a chess piece of the chess game set up
at the end of the hall would be on a particular square and another piece
would be on top of it. Each time he would put it back, but it kept
happening over and over again. After the 6th time, he said "I know
you're here, quit doing that, you're freaking me
out".
Another unnerving thing that happened was during
their first winter as owners. They would be in their family room
downstairs and hear walking in the room above them. They said the
sound was very pronounced as if a person was walking heavily but there
weren't any guests in the house. They thought it was the house
settling but by the third time, they were getting freaked.
They took their dog and looked around the room, but found no visitors or
anything amiss.
Kurt said they believe their are two ghosts, a male
and a female. He believes that at first, the female ghost was
letting them know she was there to look after things. He doesn't
know if there is any interaction between the two. What convinced
Tony and Kurt that they truly had ghosts was that time after time people
would have the same experiences. The same things kept
happening in the same rooms meaning that guests mention a strong
perfume odor in one particular room and footsteps can be heard in another
room. In one room, a guest reported seeing an actual
manifestation. This is how they determined that one of their spirits
was a female. The most frequent occurrence is the strong perfume
odor.
Kurt said his mother swears that during one of her
visits, she was tucked in by someone. This happens to be in the same
room where the manifestation of the woman appeared. Guests
have reported that this woman is middle aged and has been seen brushing
her hair. Kurt and Tony don't know who she is and there is no known
history of anyone dying in the home. He did say that Mrs. Grady died
in tragic auto accident and it's , possibly her, the perfume
fits.
Relatives of Tony came for a visit. Skeptical
about ghosts and spirits, they are now believers. At first one of
the relatives thought the whole thing was funny and to scare his wife, he
moved the chess piece. He asked Kurt to look at the chess board to
see, and when they approached the board, the pieces had been moved.
Needless to say, the man has changed his opinion.
Chess pieces aren't the only
things that have been moved. Things aren't always where they left
them. During their first two years as owners, Tony would be at
the home by himself during week, He would catch glimpses of a
shadow, never a clear view, but just enough to catch his
attention.
Kurt and Tony also own the home next door, Skeet
Cottage, built in 1896 by a Mr. Easterling. The house is Spartan,
one bath, late cracker architecture, 1700 square feet. The home was
rather large for that period of time. Mrs. Easterling, President of
Women's Club would often host tea parties. A prominent citizen in
the community, she would often require that the members of the club attend
a certain number of classical music functions per month and poetry
readings.
The Easterlings had a daughter who lived in the
home from birth in 1910 until her death in 1997. Half of her ashes
are in the back yard of the cottage and the other half are in a nearby
cemetery.
Guests of Skeet Cottage have reported hearing sounds
like those of a tea party. Several guests have reported that while
sleeping upstairs, they have been awakened by what sounds like polite
conversation and a spoon clinking against a coffee cup but when they
investigate, the noise stops. Kurt believes that there were probably
enough of those events that they left an impression at the
home.

Investigator's Note:
Something interesting happened
on our last night at Grady House. While in sitting
room attached to our bedroom, we discussed our thoughts of the days activities,
surrounded by equipment not yet in place, April experienced a coughing
attack. She went into the connecting room to get a drink of water.
As she stood at the sink, footsteps in the hallway approaching the bedroom door
were heard by April and Beth - both assuming Leona could not sleep and had
decided to join the group did not give much thought to the doorknob turning
nor the door opening.
Both April and Beth heard
the hardwood floor creak as the distinct sound of footsteps approached the
connecting room door, both April and Angie saw the door open, yet no one was
there.
April's startled gasps and total
loss for words conveyed to those in the group that something unusual had just
taken place. April stood frozen in place, four others sat unmoving
surrounded by cameras, meters and recording devises as if time had
suspended. The open door from the sitting room to the hallway was within
reach for one member, she pushed the door causing it to slam with a bang,
bringing each of us out of our immobility.
Finally, after what felt like a
long time, but was only a matter of seconds, Marlene picked up a camera, stepped
into the hallway and began taking photos. A peek through the open doorway
to Leona's room found her sleeping soundly. A series of six photos were
taken on the short walk from the sitting room door on the approach to the
bedroom door which had just opened. The overwhelming sense of apprehension
kept Marlene from walking up to that door, nor could she turn her back to return
to the sitting room. Slowly she backed her way to rejoin the stunned
group.
While the apprehension did not
stem from a foreboding or negative presence, the image was that of a strong
personality, tall and thin, wearing a western style hat, very casually leaning
against the doorframe to that bedroom door.
Of the six photos, only two were
found when the photographs were reviewed. A clear one of Leona sleeping
soundly and one very out of focus shot of the hallway.
