If you are new to investigating the paranormal you might like to read this story. It is a dialogue over a period of a few days between Daniel, an on-line member of our group and Marlene, GHG co-founder describing an area Daniel is investigating.

"My name is Daniel. I am 19yrs old living in San Diego CA. I have always had an interest in the unexplained and by taking a look at me you'd never have guessed. I first starting believing after an event that made it all begin. I was 7years old. I went to church (in a family of Catholics) one night. And I believe I saw about 6 different "Ghosts", all human form standing at the sides of the church. Being a little boy I was really frightened but was consoled by my grandmother. She totally believes in the paranormal and has stories of her own, even about this house that we live in together (with mom/dad and brother). I did convert at a young age to Buddhism and have been practicing ever since.

So far the team has not been official. Only me, my brother and a friend are the founders. We are really studying the field and have done a very small investigation here in our own community in San Diego. There is a corner on Pomarado Road in the Scripps Ranch area of San Diego where a young girl was killed by a drunk driver about 5 years ago. There have been "rumors" that you can see her sometimes standing there looking across the street so we decided to check it out. We came up with something very interesting, however it’s probably because we are beginners. We heard a voice on our first trip out Oct 5th at 900pm. I had 2 fresh new batteries for a video camera before we entered the site. I set one in the car and then loaded one into the camera. Without turning it on at all before hand, we crossed the street to the site. We get there, set up base and communication lines. I asked for permission to videotape and permission to be there and see her and about 2 minutes after that we heard a large, deep grumble coming from the north and it sounded like "Move". Due to a problem, the biggest baffle...the battery was drained when I turned it on asked for permission, so nothing was recorded. I ran back to the car to get the other fresh battery, loaded it, crossed the street to the site, turned it on and 3 minutes into it, that one drained. These were fresh new batteries. So what I am thinking, "Is that because it was our first? We made the beginners mistakes."

We did go back again to the site one week later. Same time and everything. One strange thing did happen. I put down a voice recorder and it has a flat backside and while asking for permission the recorder spun a total of 4 times and turned counterclockwise. The night was not cold at all. And with that 2 minute time frame of 9:31pm to 9:33pm when I picked up the recorder it was ICE COLD. Nothing was recorded.

Strange events occurred in that area. With gaining more and more knowledge and hopes of building a team of trusted peers I hope we can revisit that site. I do believe there is something. But being on the safe side it could be "starters jitters"."

"Ok, you have the rumors and the folklore - now gather some facts. Research the local news stories concerning the accident. If you have a contact with the local authorities ask if the accident statement is public record, if they ask why - just say you are trying to separate fact from fiction just out of curiosity. The date and the time of the accident could be important. Why was the young girl in the area, was she a passenger or walking along the road? Keeping up with documentation can be tedious, but can also be very helpful later on as supporting evidence.

Try visiting the site at the same time on different occasions - without equipment. Note date, time, weather conditions, solar and electromagnetic stats and the status of the moon. Your safety must be a priority, if you can just sit or walk around quietly. Be sure that you are not trespassing or breaking any laws. Make note of what each you sense - see, hear, feel, smell, and note any odd thoughts. Look for any logical/rational explanations that could have a bearing on the senses.

When you next visit the location with your equipment, again walk the area without the equipment for five to ten minutes - ask for permission to do a few recordings and photographs, explain that you intend no disrespect, that you are curious. If indeed there is a presence in the area let them become comfortable with you and your brother (or group), but again let me stress that your safety must come first. Be sure that each participant enters the investigation with an open, positive attitude - ask for only the Highest and the Best - do not allow negative energy in any part of your investigation.

When you retrieve your equipment, explain what you are doing (this can be done quietly to yourself if you choose). Be sure the video/voice tapes are a clean (new) tapes, have as many spare batteries as you can available. Check the weather conditions - know the temp, the humidity and make note. Document any changes that you feel while on site.

You may want to try a compass in the spot where your camera spun counterclockwise - see if there is an electromagnetic disturbance in the area. Make a note of the surroundings - power lines or water sources. There are devices available in hardware/electronic stores to detect electrical sources for baseline readings.

As you leave the area, each time say "thank you for your time" and ask if you can return to visit again. Be sure to remove any discarded paper, batteries, etc. from your investigation - leave the area as you found it or better.

Hopefully something in the above message will assist you, Best wishes with your investigation!"

"We are trying again tonight without anything but paper and pencil to note. This area, I know that the girl was a passenger and they hit a lamp post and she was DOA when help arrived. But yeah, I'll try with the authorities to get papers. What I do know for fact is that this is public open area. It’s a patch of forest. Scripps Ranch is full of those patches. Houses are about a big block away. No water in the area. Just open forested park area."

"Your reply triggered a few thoughts. Do you know the young girl's name - if so use it when you visit. Speak to her as if she were your little sister, with care and concern.

You mention a lamp post - is it metal or wood? Are the power sources above or below ground? Upon arrival - lightly run your hand over the pole - see if you feel any vibrations, check again just before you leave the area. If you have a compass or EMF meter, place it near this pole for a reading.
Note any emotions that you and your brother feel while in the area - mainly fear and anger. There are times when an emotional imprint is left at the scene and can influence your thoughts.

Danny there are times when one is lost and may need assistance crossing over - are you prepared to assist if this is the case? Be sure to tell her it is ok to move on, that she will be safe and cared for on the other side.

Take care, be safe and let us know of any results."

"How do I know if she needs help crossing over? How then do I help. My compass did not move in circles by the lamp post it seemed normal last time I was there. It is a metal post. Thank you. You are really helpful and I honestly appreciate it. It is really hard to find true people like you out there for help or even fathom the idea of the paranormal."

We are seeking and searching just as you are - we are all learning together at different levels...Unfortunately, I can only advise for you to follow your instinct and intuition as to "knowing" when to help. Tune in to your senses while you are on site. It will not hurt or hinder if you talk to her about crossing over. Try to imagine a lost child and just guide her with care and concern, let her know that love, peace and comfort await her on the other side. Above all, be sincere.

Many logical explanations can influence the compass - but it can be an interesting tool to back up your findings. Check the "stats" at
GHGGhostHunters.com before and after your visit to the site and enter those in your notes for comparison as to activity results on each investigation."

"Last night was good. I had nothing on me besides my notebook. Noted times and conditions. I had one thing again. A perfume smell. Being with just guys we don’t wear perfume. It was a light and soft flowery smell. Happened about 1100pm when I was doing what you gave me insight on, helping cross-over. I was in a comfort zone and felt no anger or fear. I kept telling her that there is a warm light and dance on in there, people are waiting for you, you’ll be safe and loved, everything will be ok and so on. I will go back as soon as possible to see what I can find out. What can I do from there?
I hope soon that I can go on to bigger investigations like "The Whaley House" or Hotel Del Coronado, or some cemeteries around here, even up to Hollywood and the Queen Mary!"

"Sounds as if you have done well. I would think that 'someone' made you aware of their presence with the fragrance. Odors are one form of communication. Now the presence is familiar with you and your sincerity. If the presence is still in the area they may be willing to share more with you in photos, tape or with your senses. I honestly feel that they are just as curious about us as we are of them and that like attracts like.

It is important that you remember not to allow negativity or fear to accompany the group on a hunt or an investigation. Say with belief and determination that you accept only the highest and the best. Ghosts will be in death, just as they were in life - just without a living, breathing body - if they were kind in life, they will be kind as a ghost. It is those that were grumpy, mean or spiteful that you should beware of.

Your account of the experience in Church is very similar to one in Pensacola many years ago by a young man at Christ Church. How wonderful that your Grandmother was so supportive and understanding.

I would think rather than ghosts, the ones you saw in the Church may have been benevolent spirits. For me a ghost is one who refuses to leave, is lost or for whatever reason has not crossed over. A spirit has crossed over and chooses to visit with us. This is only my opinion, definitely not gospel and not to be confused with your spirit guide(s).

Best wishes to you with your education, following your passion to a field that you will be an asset. Keep us posted as your search and research progresses."
